In this course, students narrow down their goals and learn the basics of business surrounding photography. This class also covers professional photography career options, such as running a commercial studio, freelance photography, Project and Archival Photography. Students put together portfolios to use as résumés and learn how to approach galleries and collectors. Participants of this course also learn how to conduct business, such as copyrighting, negotiating fees and contracts, self-promotion and accounting. This course is best taken near the end of the program as it can prepare students for the job market. In this course, students familiarize themselves with basic camera, lens, lighting and props techniques. Students learn how to use 35mm SLR cameras for professional photography along with uses of different lenses for different purposes. Basic photography concepts such as lighting, software, equipment, camera functions and conceptualizing an image are also covered in entry-level classes. This course is best taken at the very beginning of the program to help students decide if photography is the correct program for them.
